Here are some teaching strategies to help your child become a better reader:
Paired Reading - short You Tube video explaining the strategy ** Be sure to match your reading rate with your child's rate. On a second reading, try to read a bit faster and ask your child to try to read at the same pace, in order to help increase the rate and fluency.
"To - With - By" Strategy - "To, With, and By" is a fabulous repeated reading technique that will catapult your child forward in reading skills.
Questioning - Be sure to ask your child questions, throughout the story or at the end of the page, about what he or she is reading. Get them to re-read for information rather than guess. Teach them about scanning and looking for key words (one of the important words in the question).
Chunking This strategy involves breaking the text into manageable parts or looking for smaller words within words. You can draw boxes around these units of the word - not necessarily syllables. (i.e. an within plant; the word "grandparent" has 3 syllables - you can break the word into syllables, but also draw boxes around the small words "and" and "rent.")
Sight Words (also called Dolch words or "see-it-and-say-it words") - These words need to be practiced frequently so that your child has automatic recognition of them. The more words in their long term memory, the less laborious their reading will be. Think of fun ways to practice these words. For example, use any game board, such as Snakes and Ladders, and have your child read a word before they can roll the dice. Practice a small amount of words, working towards mastery before adding new words. This site enables you to download free sight word cards.
